More about the event:
Lace up those roller-skates, grab your bicycle, hop on a scooter, put the leash on your pooch… as Inglewood is all set to launch the third annual Car Free Sunday on Sept. 17. Every year on or around 22 September, cities across the globe celebrate World Car Free Day, encouraging motorists to give up their cars for a day. The event highlights the numerous benefits of going car-free to citizens—including reduced air pollution and the promotion of walking and cycling in a safer environment. Calgarians and visitors are invited to stroll and roll through the heart of Calgary’s Music Mile, while showing support for local businesses. The main vein of Inglewood (9 Ave. SE from 11 St. to 14 St.) will be closed to all vehicles from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Businesses will extend their storefronts to the sidewalk, providing visitors with a chance to enjoy Calgary's original main street without the usual hustle and bustle of cars and trucks. Visitors can enjoy the historic neighbourhood, live music, a New Orleans-style marching band, numerous street performances, fashion shows,
dining on expanded patios, and plentiful sidewalk shopping at some of the city’s finest local retailers.
"Boasting 250 businesses, Inglewood is one of Calgary's most vibrant communities" affirms
Rebecca O’Brien, Executive Director of the Inglewood Business Improvement Area. "We extend a warm invitation to Calgarians and visitors to bring your family, your dog, your friends and join with cities from Bogota, Jarkata to Reykjavik, and cities across North America in celebrating Car Free Day!"
Inglewood is proud to be one of Calgary’s most accessible neighborhoods, with scenic multi-use paths along the Bow. It’s the perfect destination for those who want to leave their vehicles behind when visiting the neighborhood for Car Free Sunday on September 17.
